Common Symptoms of General Car Trouble

Common Symptoms of General Car TroubleAs a car owner it is important to provide your vehicle with the maintenance and repairs it needs to continue to provide you with safe and reliable transportation. Aside from the scheduled services that are detailed in your owner's manual, it can be difficult to know when you need to visit the auto shop. There are a few clues however, including the following, that likely mean it is time for professional auto repair.

Weird Noises

Strange sounds are a common symptom of car trouble. If you notice any odd noises head to the shop right away. Common issues that produce noise include low brake pads that create a grinding noise or an exhaust leak that can result in increased engine noise.

Odd Vibrations

There are a number of issues that can cause your car to shake and shimmy. For example, if your car's steering wheel rocks back and forth it is probably time for a wheel alignment. However, if your shifter lever is vibrating you'll want to schedule transmission diagnostics as soon as possible.

Fluid Leaks

Your vehicle uses a number of fluids to operate its various systems. If you ever spot a fluid leak it is imperative that you get to the repair before the issue expands. Common fluid leaks include an oil leak, transmission fluid leak, differential leak, brake fluid leak, power steering leak or coolant leak.

Decreased Performance

A general decrease in performance should be a cause for concern. This can include a drop in fuel economy, an increase in exhaust smoke, difficulty accelerating or idling or hard starting. Many times these problems are caused by minor issues, such as a clogged fuel filter or worn spark plugs, but if left unchecked they can grow worse and more expensive to fix.

Dashboard Indicator Lights

One of the more obvious signs of trouble is a dashboard indicator light. Dash lights, such as the check engine light, ABS (brake) light, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light and others, are triggered by sensors in the vehicle that work to detect onboard issues. Delaying repairs will allow them to get worse.
