5 Need to Know Signs of Brake Trouble

5 Need to Know Signs of Brake TroubleFar too often drivers ignore issues that their vehicle is having. While disregarding a slight engine knock may eventually leave you stranded, not paying attention to brake trouble can have far worse results. The brakes are a car or truck's main safety feature and if they are not in proper working order there is the possibility that you will not have adequate braking power in order to avoid an accident. If you experience any of these five signs of brake trouble be sure to contact your auto shopto have them repaired ASAP.

Spongy Brake Pedal

A brake pedal that rests closer to the floor than it used to or needs to be pushed harder than normal to get a reaction from the brakes is likely suffering from highly worn out brake pads. However, this problem may be caused by air in the brake lines or a dangerous brake fluid leak. Never drive your vehicle if you suspect leaking brake fluid!

Braking Vibrations

If you feel a vibration in the brake pedal or throughout your vehicle as you slow down it is likely that your car has warped rotors. Rotors are what the brake pads grab to slow the vehicle in a disc brake system. If they become warped due to excessive heat it means there won't be a smooth surface for the pads to grab and your braking ability will be greatly reduced.

Pulling Sensation

When you begin to slow down your car should continue in a straight line. If it seems to pull to one side or the other there may be uneven wear on the brake pads. Due to the control issue this presents it is important to have the problem repaired. Be aware there is a chance a bigger issue is causing this to happen, such as contaminated brake fluid or a stuck wheel cylinder.

Grinding Sound

Any noise that occurs when braking, such as a grinding, howling or screeching, is a strong indicator that the brake pads have completely worn down and metal is now grinding on metal. This is an extreme safety hazard that needs to be repaired immediately!

Dashboard Indicator Light

If the dashboard light comes on that reads ABS, which stands for anti-lock braking system, you'll need to head to the repair shop to find out what the problem is, as a sensor in the system has detected some sort of trouble.

At the first sign of trouble with your brakes make an appointment with your mechanic, for your own safety and that of other people on the road.
