Is it Time for New Shocks?

Is it Time for New Shocks? When it comes to safety in the car, most people think of things such as airbags, seatbelts and the brakes. While those are all incredibly important to your well-being while traveling down the road, there is another system that you need to think about as well. The suspension is generally thought of as a comfort feature, giving you a smooth ride, but it plays an integral role in keeping you safe as well. Aside from absorbing the unevenness of the roadway the suspension keeps all four wheels on the ground at all times. This ensures your car doesn't roll over while cornering and has complete braking power when it is called for. If you ever notice any of these signs of suspension trouble be sure to get to your local auto repair shop as soon as possible.

One corner is low

If you notice that one corner of your vehicle is lower than the others but the tire is not flat, it is likely that the suspension has grown tired and collapsed on itself. This is a problem that needs to be addressed ASAP as failed suspension will cause your car to drift and accelerate tire wear.

Oil on the struts

If you suspect that the struts have grown weak you can try rubbing a rag on them by accessing them through the wheel well. If any oil or grease appears on the rag it may be an indication that the casing of the hydraulic shock has cracked, or a seal has failed, and the oil it relies on to properly do its job is now leaking out of it.

Rolling sensation

One of the more frightening signs of suspension trouble is if you feel like your car is going to roll over when going around a corner. This is a strong indication that the anti-sway bar has failed. The anti-sway bar is tasked with shifting the vehicle's center of gravity while cornering, if it fails, your car could flip.

Excessive bouncing

To test your vehicle's suspension system you can push on the hood or rear of the vehicle to get it to start bouncing up and down. Once you stop pushing on the car the vehicle should return to a stable position within three to four bounces. Any more movement than that and you'll likely need suspension service.

Pay attention to the trouble your car is having and take care of it as soon as you can to maintain a safe ride.
